How to Make an Inexpensive First Aid Kit

The weather is getting warmer and we find ourselves taking small trips with our kids.  Boo boos can occur almost anywhere. As a mom and RN I have been able to inexpensively put together a small first aid kit for my family.

Keep in mind that this first aid kit fits the needs of my family and may not completely work for yours. If your family requires extra medications, please remember to pack them in this kit. This kit is not meant to to treat fevers or illness, rather:

  • Abrasions (scratches),
  • Cuts, Splinters
  • Stings
  • Minor Burns
  • Minor Allergic Reaction
  • Strains or Sprains

Almost everyone will need to use a first aid kit at some point. Take the time to prepare a kit to have available for home and travel.  A small compact first aid kit can be easily stored where ever you go.  Some of these items you can gather from your home without running to the store.

Items you will need

  • A small container or waterproof nylon bag
  • Assorted Band-aids
  • Tweezer
  • Gauze
  • Small sealed alcohol wipes
  • Tape
  • Small Scissor
  • Small tube of triple antibiotic ointment
  • Small Container of Hand sanitiezor or wipes
  • Safety Pins
  • Bandanna
  • Benadryl
  • You may want to pack a pair of gloves, but since this is for your family only I wouldn’t bother.

Putting it all together

First you are going want to check to see if you can find any savings on the above items. Feel free to check our coupon database to look for current first aid coupons.

Once you have completely packed your first aid kit with the items your family will need you will want to read up on basic first aid.

Print a small copy of basic first aid steps and keep it in your kit. You will need to know what to do in case of certain emergencies. Don’t put yourself at risk by thinking you can remember or do everything about every situation. If you are unsure, or if the situation is unsafe or becomes unsafe CALL 911.
