Let’s have some fun this Christmas! If you’re spending time at home, chances are you may hear the kids shout out the “b” word. And we can’t have bored kids. Let’s give them a great craft to do at home and a craft that doesn’t require you to run out to the store for supplies. I’m all about reusing items.
It is time to pull out those empty egg cartons.
This egg carton Elf Christmas craft is the perfect way to reuse egg cartons. Make all of them to play with or place them around the house as Christmas decorations. It’s the perfect Christmas season craft for younger children with adult supervision. Really puts you in the Holiday spirit.
Fun Tip: You can even add a string to the back of them and hang them on the Christmas tree or from your windows to make festive decorations.
Please note that you will find our easy step-by-step instructions below as well as a printable version.
Materials Needed:
For this craft, you will need a few basic supplies and tools. If you are an avid crafter like me, you will already have most of them in your craft box, drawer, cabinet, or room.
- cardboard egg carton or paper egg cartons (both work)
- hot glue or school glue
- green craft paint
- red, green, and white paper – construction or cardstock
- 2 red small pom poms
- googly eyes
Tools Needed
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Hot glue gun
What kind of glue should I use?
Regular school glue will work for this project, but will just take a lengthy dry time. You can choose to use hot glue instead to shorten the process. I highly recommend school glue if the littles are working on this craft. Just make sure to let it thoroughly dry and press and hold for the glue to take.
Are egg cartons safe for crafts?
You may be surprised to hear this. I was too!! Not all egg cartons are safe to use for crafts. The eggshells may carry Salmonella and be transferred to the egg carton. The elderly and kids are more susceptible to Salmonella.
Now, you may ask, why did I make this post and craft in the first place? Inspect your carton for any obvious signs of egg leakage. You can simply spray your egg carton with a disinfecting spray before beginning to kill any salmonella on the surface. We will be painting the surface of the egg cartons. This means we will not be in contact with any locked-in bacteria once it has been painted over.
Directions To Make This Egg Carton Christmas Elf Craft
STEP ONE: First, gather all your craft supplies so you have them handy in one spot. Then cut out three individual cups from your egg carton.
STEP TWO: Next, paint all four egg carton cups using your green craft paint. set aside until completely dry.
STEP THREE: While you wait for your paint to dry, cut out the following (1) 2-inch green triangle, (3) 1/2-inch triangles, (2) feet, and (1) zigzag belt.
STEP FOUR: Once your paint is completely dry you are ready to assemble your elf. Using hot glue or white tacky glue neatly stack two egg cups together. Then repeat and attach both egg carton “globes” to each other. At this point, you can do any green paint touch-up, if needed.
STEP FIVE: It is time to put on the elf accessories. To make the hat glue your three triangles to your one large green one.
STEP SIX: Time to dress up your elf. Using hot glue or white glue attach your elf pieces as in the photo above. Don’t forget to add two googly eyes and a red pom pom just below his eyes and one for his hat. Optional: instead of a pom pom for the top of your elf hat you can use jingle bells.
And if you are using it as a Christmas ornament you can add a hanging string to the back.
