Does your freezer drive you crazy? Let’s change that around with some helpful tips to improve Your Freezer Space.

Drastically Improve Your Freezer Space

If you are like most families, no matter what the size of your freezer is, it can get full and disorganized quickly. If you are a fan of freezer meals, and meal prepping, or are a savvy grocery shopper, your freezer is likely always on the fuller side.

This can make finding what you need a challenge, and you find that you don’t have all of the room that you need. Here are some simple ways that you can drastically improve your freezer space!

No matter how much freezer space you have, knowing how to stay organized and in charge of your freezer space is essential.

Take it Out of the Box

If you have frozen items that come in a cardboard box, those boxes are taking up a lot of valuable space inside your freezer.

Take the items out of the box, and then freeze them. Most of the time inside the box the items are in cellophane or plastic bags. If yours aren’t, lose the box anyway, and put the items in a freezer-safe plastic bag.

The same holds for plastic containers. I know how convenient it is to stash leftovers in the freezer, but plastic containers can be bulky and are tough to wedge into a crowded freezer. In most cases, you can lay items flat by using a freezer bag.

Freeze it Flat

Freeze your food flat to store in your freezer. To do this, put your food in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag or run it through your Foodsaver. Remove the air from the bag, and then lie it flat inside of your freezer until it is frozen through.

Flat food is stackable food, and that means that you can get a lot more into your freezer. This is the best way to store all of your freezer to slow cooker meals

DIY Magnetic Containers

This is an idea you might not have considered before, if you freeze small items like leftover diced onions or fresh herbs, you can put them in magnetic containers that you can make yourselves.

Just put a magnet on a freezer-safe container and then stick the container to the top or side of your freezer. You get to reduce your food waste and save space in the freezer too.

Use Binder Clips

Do you have half-used bags of frozen vegetables, fries, or chicken nuggets in your freezer? Did you know that you can save some space in your freezer by using binder clips? Yes!!! You can use them to close bags and then clip them to the shelves inside your freezer.

This can make it easier to see what’s in the freezer too.

Use Plastic Magazine Files

Use plastic magazine file boxes turned on their sides to save space in your freezer and keep it organized. Put the freezer bags that you have frozen flat inside of the magazine files.

This can keep your stacks of food neat and organized and is especially helpful for keeping your freezer meals organized.

Add Plastic Baskets to Your Chest Freezer

It’s easy to lose your food in a regular freezer, but it is really easy to lose items inside a chest freezer. Items get forgotten and the next thing you know, they are at the very bottom of your chest freezer where they are REALLY forgotten.

One way to combat this is to add plastic baskets to your chest freezer. You can have vegetables in a basket, meat in a basket, soups in a basket, you get the idea. This can make it easier to find, and reach the food in your chest freezer.

More Freezer Tips

Label – Label everything with a Sharpie marker with the item inside of the bag. Then add the date that you put it in the freezer! Once frozen a lot of items can be hard to distinguish from others so avoid confusion by labeling your food.

Some people like to make cute labels for their freezer items, but I find they fall off. Then you are left guessing as to what is inside.

Fill it up – Keeping your freezer full helps to keep it colder. It also makes it more energy efficient, which can reduce your energy costs lower.

Keep a list – It’s important to keep a list of what you have inside your freezer.

This way you can rotate your food properly and avoid freezer-burnt food. You can keep a paper list on the freezer, or if you have a white freezer, you can use a dry-erase marker to keep a list on the freezer itself!

Getting the most out of your freezer space can help you to save money and time. It can also help you to serve delicious and healthy freezer meals for your family.
