Mmmmm!! Orange Crush Soda brings me back to summer days as a child. I can remember drinking the only soda that my mom would allow and then heading through the sprinkler. Oh, memories!!! I almost feel like I am 10 years old again.
Just imagine how much fun and joy this recipe brought back. It seems that adding soda to baking is all the RAGE nowadays. I decided to give it a shot myself. I love orange and I love that this soda is caffeine-free, which means I can serve it to my kids and myself. And let’s not pretend there is anything remotely healthy about these cupcakes.
HMMMMM ….. a Sweet Treat…… After all, if you have one, they may just taste like having more. And then when your family stops stealing the cupcakes, grab yourself a glass of Crush and enjoy the fruit of your labor!
Ingredients and directions are listed below. The first is for the cupcakes, followed by the recipe for the frosting. Don’t forget to bookmark this recipe for later.

STEP ONE: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and prepare your cupcake pan with the cupcake tins that you desire. I do like to line them with fun cupcake liners. Once you are done with your prepping, set them aside.
STEP TWO: Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside. Make sure you have a nice smooth mixture without any lumps.
STEP THREE: Beat together butter, orange gelatin, and granulated sugar with a mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Then add eggs beat well, and scrape the bowl when necessary.
STEP FOUR: Now you will want to reduce speed to low and gradually add flour mixture, beat until combined. Add milk and the Crush soda and beat blended. Use an ice cream scooper or a big spoon and portion the batter evenly into the cupcake tins.
STEP FIVE: Bake in the oven for 18 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean. When baked, set aside and let them cool while you prepare the icing.
Quality control is my favorite part of being a baker. So get that teaspoon ready, because you will need to taste test at least a few times this Orange Crush Soda Frosting. YUMMMM!!

Do you have to use whole milk? I only have skim. Also, would salted butter be ok? thanks
Hi Emily, Yes, using Skim milk will be fine. The consistency maybe slightly off, but doubt you will use it. And if using salted butter, don’t add in the 1/2 tsp of salt. It is easier to regulate how much salt you have in a recipe with unsalted. Salted you are never too sure. I think though you will be fine using it and not adding any extra salt in. Come back and let me know how it turns out with those slight adjustments. 🙂
I took your suggestions and didn’t add salt. I did have 1% milk and the consistency was no issue. I would like more of a Crush flavor, but they are still yummy!
Forgot to mention the yield was 20, not 12. Surprised me
OH WOW!!! That is quite the difference. I am so glad everything worked out. I wonder…. for next time. Using a little orange extract to give it more of a boost in flavor. I will have to give that a shot too and report back. 🙂
