The History Behind the Beef
The story of Salisbury steak dates back to the late 19th century and begins with a man named Dr. James H. Salisbury, a physician, and advocate of healthy eating. During a time when heavy, fatty meals were the norm, Dr. Salisbury became a pioneer in advocating for a balanced diet to improve health.
His unique approach involved incorporating lean ground beef into his patients’ meals, believing it would have a positive impact on their overall well-being.Dr. Salisbury’s creation, which he called “salisbury steak,” quickly gained popularity among both his patients and the wider public.
Over the years, Salisbury steak has evolved, with countless variations and adaptations finding their way into kitchens worldwide. The concept of the steak has been transformed into delightful meatballs, offering a bite-sized twist on the classic dish.
This evolution allows for greater versatility and opens the door to even more creative flavor combinations.
Semi-Homemade Meatballs
For this recipe and for my sanity, I chose to purchase frozen Italian meatballs. It is one less step and mess I have to create.
Frozen Meatballs: The type of meatballs you want to use is up to you. I like to use a meatball mix, but you can purchase lean ground beef meatballs, turkey meatballs, chicken meatballs, or a sausage meatball mixture. However, if you choose, you could make your own meatballs from scratch.
Ingredients Needed
- 1 Bag (26oz) Italian Meatballs, frozen
- 1 can (10.5 oz) French Onion Soup
- 2 ยฝ cups beef broth
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
- ยฝ tsp salt
- 2 cups egg noodles
Additional Add-In: Fresh sliced mushrooms, chopped onions
Preparing This Meal In The Slow Cooker
STEP ONE: Add the frozen meatballs to the slow cooker.
STEP TWO: Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, French onion soup, and ketchup into the slow cooker. Then add in seasonings. Toss to coat.
STEP THREE: Cover and cook on HIGH for 2.5 hours.
STEP FOUR: Add in the uncooked noodles. You will want them covered in liquid. If you do not have enough liquid to cover all the noodles, add in ยฝ cup beef broth.
STEP FIVE: Cook on HIGH for an additional 30-45 mins or until noodles are al dente. Serve and Enjoy.
