One of my favorite things to do in the winter is curl up with a steaming cup of hot cocoa and spend the evening relaxing and watching Hallmark movies. So forget running out to Starbucks! And make your own.
This is one of my favorite white hot chocolate recipes because with just a few simple ingredients you have a delicious beverage.
If you love the combination of white chocolate and hot chocolate you will want to try your hand at making these White Hot Chocolate Bombs. They are delicious as they are pretty.
Is White Chocolate Really Chocolate?
Did you know white chocolate doesnโt have any chocolate in it? (MIND BLOWN) – Right?
You see, there are no cocoa liquors or chocolate solids in white chocolate, unlike those found in milk and dark chocolate. White chocolate is actually made from cocoa butter so it has a very different flavor profile.
According to the Washington Post, a cocoa bean contains equal parts cocoa nibs and cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is what gives chocolate its rich mouthfeel, and the nibs hold most of the distinctive smell and taste. Absent of nibs, “white chocolate is basically just sweet fat.”
I say it’s a delicious and sweet-tasting candy. And I for one, will not spend any time debating whether or not white chocolate is real chocolate.
Ingredients Needed For Hot Chocolate
This recipe will make one cup. Double this recipe if making more than one cup.
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers – chopped
- Marshmallow and candy cane crumbles for optional toppings
Please note: Do not use heavy cream or whipping cream as a substitute for whole milk. These two substitutions will be too heavy and most likely give you a massive tummy ache!
Instructions to Make White Hot Chocolate
STEP ONE: Add your milk to a large measuring pitcher. Microwave for 2 minutes. Milk should be steaming. If you heat more than one serving, youโll need to adjust the cooking time.
STEP TWO: Remove the pitcher from the microwave and add the chopped melting chocolate wafers. Whisk the two until the wafers have melted. This should cool the hot cocoa to a perfect sipping temp.
STEP THREE: Top with marshmallows and or candy cane crumbles and enjoy.
Hot Chocolate Variations
- Change the chocolate to milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even a blend of chocolates.
- Swap out dairy milk for non-dairy alternatives like oat milk or almond milk.
- Top with whipped cream or caramel sauce.
- Add a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream or Kahlua to make an adult version of white hot chocolate!
- Mix in any flavor you like with a splash of flavored syrup, like vanilla, caramel, or peppermint.
- Here is a fun idea – create a hot chocolate bar for friends. Add in different chocolate and toppings and everyone can create their own delicious hot chocolate.
- There are so many different variations to this simple recipe. I bet you can think of a few yourself.
